How a Patient Educator Can Help You

Medicinal marijuana is an exciting field, and one that can raise many questions for new patients. With forthcoming legislation regarding recreational cannabis in Canada there is an abundance of information available.

Cannabinoid Medical Clinic prides itself on having a patient education program to help you navigate the world of medicinal cannabis. Following physician appointments, every prescribed patient at CMC gets to sit with a patient educator who will help with questions on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

Cannabis Plants
Your educator can discuss plant genetics (Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid) and how each one may affect you, cannabinoid percentages (THC, CBD), terpenes and flavonoids (responsible for scents and taste).

Medical Documents
A medial document is similar to a prescription. This is what your physician writes to allow you to access medicinal cannabis. Unlike a traditional prescription however, your medical document can sometimes allow you access to a wide variety of products. Your educator will be able to help you interpret the medical document, explain to you what you can order and how much you can order.

Dosage & Consumption
Aside from smoking (which is not recommended by CMC physicians) patients can also vaporize their cannabis or ingest it via oils or capsules. Our education team will be able to walk you through the process of using a vaporizer. If you prefer oils, CMC will provide you with titration schedules depending on your prescription so you know exactly how much to take each day. Licensed producers are developing new products everyday whether it be dried herb, cannabis oil, decarboxylated fine milled product, or even cannabis capsules. Whether you’re concerned about dosing, titration, or product preparation your educator can help you.

Licensed Producer Selection
There are currently 52 licensed producers of medical cannabis in Canada. Your Patient Educator will have details on which producers can provide cannabis to medical patients, are licensed to produce oils, who is accepting new patients and who has the product you need in stock.Whether you’re looking for a specific type of product, or wondering which producers have compassionate pricing programs, your CMC educator can help you navigate these choices and find the right fit for you.

Legal Issues
Possessing cannabis for non medical purposes remains illegal in Canada. As a patient it is important to know your rights. Your educator will help you understand how much cannabis you can carry and possess and also teach you about travelling with your product.

Product Care
Your educator will be able to teach you about product storage and care in order to help you get the most out of your product and maximize freshness.

Coverage
The majority of private insurance companies are not covering medicinal cannabis at the present time, however, it is best to check with your provider. Veterans of Canada’s armed forces may be eligible for coverage through Veterans Affairs Canada. Additionally, numerous licensed producers offer compassionate pricing programs based on the patient’s income in the last year or for those receiving federal or provincial assistance. If you believe you qualify for one of these programs your educator will be able to discuss these with you.
